What Do SPF and PA Mean in Sunscreen?

Understand SPF & PA and choose the right sunscreen

In summer, UV exposure can increase quickly even in daily life. Sunscreen is essential, but labels like SPF and PA can be confusing. Here is a simple explanation and practical tips.

1. What is SPF?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) mainly reflects protection against UVB rays, which can burn skin and cause redness. A higher number means stronger UVB protection, but remember the real effect depends on how much product you apply and how often you reapply.

2. What is PA?

PA indicates protection against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and can contribute to wrinkles and sagging over time. More + signs mean stronger UVA protection.

3. How to choose sunscreen

  • For daily commuting: SPF30/PA+++ is often enough.
  • For beaches/mountains or strong sun: SPF50/PA++++ is recommended.
  • Choose textures you can use daily (gel, milk, stick, spray, etc.)
  • Check whether it is easy to remove and whether it suits sensitive skin.

4. Reapply!

Even with high SPF, sunscreen can wear off due to sweat, oil, or friction (mask, clothing, wiping your face). Reapplying is key. Stick-type products are handy for reapplication without dirtying your hands.
